چکیده
WHIGHAM, D. 1984. The influence of vines on the growth of Liquidambar styraciflua L. (sweetgum). Can. J. For. Res. 14: 37-39. The effect of vines on diameter growth of Liquidambar styraciflua L. (sweetgum) in a 40-year-old abandoned field was measured by vine removal experiments. Removal of vines from the trunk, branches, and ground had a significant positive effect on growth during each of the 4 years of the study, but removal of vines from only the trunk and branches did not produce a significant increase in growth. The data suggest that vines influence forest production by competing with trees even after trees have grown tall enough to avoid direct physical suppression.

DRIS Analysis Identifies a Common Potassium Imbalance in Sweetgum Plantations
DRIS (Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System) analysis was applied to fast-growing sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) plantations in the southeast United States as a tool for nutrient diagnosis and fertilizer recommendations. First, standard foliar nutrient ratios for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) were established using high-yield stand...
متن کاملSweetgum Dornlancy Release : Effects of Chilling , Photo - period , and Genotype
In Liquidambar sfyraciflua L., 1200 to 1600 hours of chilling (3 D C) resulted in rapid resumption of growth under greenhouse forcing conditions. Long photoperiods were effective substitutes for chilling. Plants from southern Alabama (Lat. 31°) had a lower chilling requirement than those from western Tennessee (Lat. 36°). Growth rate of plants under long photoperiod varied directly with degree ...
متن کاملEffects of Artificial Defoliation on Growth and Biomass Accumulation in Short-Rotation Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) in North Carolina
Sweetgum, Liquidambar styraciflua L. (Hamamelidales: Hamamelidaceae), is a species of interest for short-rotation plantation forestry in the southeastern United States. Despite its high levels of resistance to many native insects and pathogens, the species is susceptible to generalist defoliators during outbreak epidemics. The objective of this field study was to evaluate the potential impact o...
متن کاملIsoprene emission, photosynthesis, and growth in sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) seedlings exposed to short- and long-term drying cycles.
Isoprene emissions were studied in one-year old sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) seedlings during nine drying-rewatering cycles extending over five months. Each drying cycle lasted to the point of leaf wilting. Growth was essentially stopped in response to the first drying cycle, though seedling survival and capacity to recover turgor on rewatering remained high throughout the entire nine ...
متن کاملLeaf senescence and late-season net photosynthesis of sun and shade leaves of overstory sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) grown in elevated and ambient carbon dioxide concentrations.
We examined the effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on leaf demography, late-season photosynthesis and leaf N resorption of overstory sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) trees in the Duke Forest Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment. Sun and shade leaves were subdivided into early leaves (formed in the overwintering bud) and late leaves (formed during the growing season). Overal...
